Lecture: Sweet Ideology of Soviet Space Dogs During the Cold War
/Marianne Smith Memorial Lecture: Dr. Olesya Turkina - 03/13/18
On March 13, Dr. Olesya Turkina came to the Bruce Museum as our 2018 Marianne Smith Memorial Lecturer. Marianne Smith served as the curator of science at the Bruce from 1989 to 2000. With her passion for finding the connections between art and science, she truly embodied the ideals of the Bruce museum. It was this passion that inspired the Museum to establish this lecture series in her memory.
Dr. Turkina is the Senior Research Fellow at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Associate Professor and head of the MA Program in Curatorial Studies at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Saint Petersburg State University. She is a curator, a critic, and an author, and has made the study of the cosmos her life's work.
Her talk delved into the art, science, and ideology that surrounded the dogs that were the pioneers of the Soviet space program. She asks the question, would you send your dog into space?
